Laura Kate Matthews Sparks, 87, passed away peacefully at Yadkin Nursing Center on Wednesday July 3, 2019. She was born in Surry County, NC on February 18, 1932; daughter of the late General Dewey Matthews and Stacie Wall Matthews, was a member of Richmond Hill Baptist Church and attended Boonville High School. Mrs. Sparks retired from R J Reynolds Tobacco Company at Brook Cove plant. She enjoyed; being outdoors in nature with wildlife, working in her flower garden and watching birds from her window, the humming birds on the feeder on porch. Survivors include her children; Chris (Phyllis) Sparks, Renee (Terry) Lawson, Joyce (Kevin) Reece and Laurie (Arnold) Powell, daughter in law; Cathy Sparks, seven grandchildren; Christie Sparks, Melissa Sparks, Brent Lineberry, Amanda (Ronnie) Bullin, Rebecca (Richard) Pendry, Chet (Megan) Powell and Savanna Powell, six great grandchildren; Austin Lineberry, Andrew Lineberry, Colton Bullin, Kylie Bullin, Jace Pendry and Autumn Pendry. two sisters; Rosa (Homer) Wilhelm and Landa Brown, several nieces and nephews and her 4-legged companion “Sweetie” Sheba. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; J. C. Sparks, Son; Phillip Sparks, grandson; Heston Powell, brother; Sherrill Matthews and two sisters; Fairye Fuller and Ann Kinsey. A celebration of life service will be conducted on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at 3:00 pm at Richmond Church with the Rev. Will Hamric officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 to 3:00 pm at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Richmond Hill Baptist Church, 2205 Richmond Hill Church Rd, Boonville, NC 27011, Attn: building fund.
