Lonnie Mack Edwards, Jr.

Lonnie Mack Edwards, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, passed away in his son’s home in Las Vegas, NV on Thursday, October 18, 2023, with family by his side. He was 69 years old.

Lonnie was born in Yadkinville, NC on September 7, 1954. After graduating from Forbush High School, he began his career at McDonalds. Lonnie had an unmatchable work ethic; he rose quickly in management and opened numerous franchises throughout the state of North Carolina before deciding to branch out on his own and become a restauranteur. He owned many businesses in Yadkinville, most notably the Yadkin Dairy Freeze, Main Street Cafe, and The Dog House. Prior to retiring, he helped his daughter establish the Hot Dog Depot in Rock Hill, SC. His legacy, however, will forever lie in the hearts of those who loved him.

He was a passionate ball player, a master at pool, and an okay golfer. He loved mountains and beaches, all genres of music, and sweets, especially honey buns, Krispy Kreme donuts, and coconut cream pie. He was smart, driven, and undeniably charming; and he was a fighter. Lonnie was also a man of faith – he spent many years as an interim pastor and Sunday school teacher at the Yadkinville Church of God and served as the superintendent for the North Carolina Church of God. 

He is survived by his son, Dr. Brian J. Edwards, and his husband Tom; his daughter, Cristie Edwards Phillips, her husband, David, and their three children - the loves of his life - Parker, Piper, and Peyton; his sister, Shirley Edwards; his sister, Amy Hobson, and her husband, Chuck; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Lonnie Mack Edwards, Sr., and his mother, Annie Pearl Vestal Edwards.

The family will receive guests on Friday, November 17 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Gentry Family Funeral Service on 5108 US-601 in Yadkinville, NC 27055. A celebration of life service will immediately follow from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Lonnie will be laid to rest next to his parents at Zion Primitive Baptist Church in Sparta, NC during a private ceremony.
