Ruby Wyatt Johnson

Yadkinville - Mrs. Ruby Wyatt Johnson, 89, died Monday, July 3, 2023 at her home surrounded by her three children. Ruby was born June 10, 1934 in Wilkes County to Oscar and Clara Taylor Wyatt and grew up in Pine Swamp near Sparta. She graduated from Clevenger Business College in North Wilkesboro. She lived in Yadkin County for 61 years where she worked as a teacher’s aide for Courtney Elementary School, as bookkeeper, mentor, and jack-of-all trades for her husband’s and children’s businesses, and finally as a confidant and mentor to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Dave L. Johnson, in 2001; her parents; her three sisters Pauline Shew, Mary Gaines, Carol Burt; and brother “Little Howard”. She is survived by her three children Jane (Ray Mills), Steve (Cheryl Millsaps), and Phil; grandchildren Hannah (Dean Miller), Mikki, Hallie, Jace, and Hunter Grace; great grandchildren Cade, Cash, Ellie, Case, and Eli; nieces and nephews Leeann (Lisa Queen), Michael, Claire (David Avilla), Wanda, Trish, James, and Linda; cousin David Wayne (Barbara Jessup); and her faithful cat Copper. Her extended family includes scores of children who were students at Courtney School, neighbors, and friends of her children and grandchildren. Everyone who knew her loved her; her door was always open and the coffee pot was always full. Ruby loved gardening, flowers, computers, bookkeeping, and sewing. She was humble and caring and, with the help of her family, she remained independent and self-sufficient. She was weed eating, tending her garden, and quilting three days before she died. She made more than 200 quilts during her lifetime and was always helping family and friends with special projects. She often said she was the luckiest old woman alive. Her children and grandchildren are certain that she is the best person who ever lived.
