Ruby Ruth Huie Matthews, 92, of East Bend went to be with her Lord on Saturday, November 20, 2021,
surrounded by family at her home. Mrs. Matthews was born on November 2, 1929, in Wilkes County, to
the late Rev. John “Milo” and Pearlie Hawkins Huie.
Mrs. Matthews was a member of Forbush Friends Meeting and will be remembered for her love of The
Lord and her family. Ruby retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with 37 years of service. In her
retirement, Ruby enjoyed travelling with her husband and friends on bus tours across the United States.
When not travelling, Ruby enjoyed baking, sewing, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Matthews (Married 1951); a son, Dr. Wayne C.
Matthews; and siblings, Gladys (Gilbert Sr., Horace “Bud”) Anderson Hicks, James (Margaret, Lois) Huie,
Clarence (Betsy) Huie, Sr., Opal Huie, and Grace Huie. Surviving are Wayne’s wife, Loretta T. Matthews;
sons, Hoke (Catherine) Matthews, Clint (Kim) Matthews, and John (Clara) Matthews; nine grandchildren,
Jessica (Jason) Vaught, Abby (Hugo) Salas, Emmy (Steven) Corn, Wes (Kayla) Matthews, Chelsea
Matthews (Fiancé, Ben Hulcher), John Matthews II, Makayla Matthews, Jacob Matthews, and Grayson
Matthews; and three great-grandchildren, Elijah Vaught, Eleanor Vaught, and Landon Corn.
The funeral service will be held Monday, November 22, 2021, at Forbush Friends Meeting Family Life
Center at 11am, with Rev. Mitchell See, Rev. Jake Penley, and Rev. Steven Corn officiating. The family
will receive friends today, Sunday, November 21, 2021, at Gentry Family Funeral Home (East Bend) from
6-8pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Forbush Friends Meeting Cemetery Fund, c/o Mary
Wooten (2821 Mill Hill Rd, East Bend, NC 27018). The family wishes to thank everyone for their
