Shirley Ann Barney Russell

June 15, 1935 — November 9, 2024

Shirley Ann Barney Russell (89) went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 9, 2024. Shirley will now be worshipping at the feet of Jesus with the love of her life and husband of 53 years Preacher Bobby Lee Russell, who preceded her in death.

Shirley was preceded in death by her mother and father, Hayden and Alice Barney, her brother and sister-in-law John and Martha Barney, her brother-in-law TW "Took" Poindexter and son-in-law Walt Goss.

Left to cherish Shirley's memories are her daughter Pamela Goss, daughter Kimberly Mathis and husband Doylan, her son Bobby Russell Jr., and wife Susan. Grandchildren Brad Mathis (Dena), Chris Mathis (Nicole), Keri Newsome (Justin) Erin Nix (Drew), and Laurel Watts (Jessop). Great grandchildren Daniel Mathis, Liam Mathis, Parker Mathis, Kip Newsome, and Mason Shore; and sisters Sylvia Poindexter and Cheryl Miller along with several nephews and nieces.

Shirley was a Proverbs 31 woman who was an example to all who knew her. She quietly supported Preacher Bobby in his ministry and was highly respected as her role of a pastor's wife. All who knew her loved her and knew her to be selfless and always giving, caring more for the needs of others than her own. Shirley's favorite time of the year was Christmas and she spent the whole year preparing. She loved having the whole family together during this special time. "Nanny" would spend the year buying gifts for her grandchildren so they could enjoy the 12 Days of Christmas. A great deal of time was spent making homemade candies and desserts to share with others. This will be her best Christmas yet, spending it in Heaven worshiping Jesus with those cherished loved ones that have gone before her. Merry Christmas, Momma.

The family will receive friends from 12-2 PM Tuesday November 12, 2024 at Turners Creek Baptist Church. Her funeral will be conducted at 2:00 PM following the visitation at the church by Rev. Scott Welch, Rev. Danny Dodds, and Rev. Brad Mathis. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville is serving the Russell family.
