Vernell Steelman Matthews

Matthews East Bend - Vernell Little Steelman Matthews, 90, of East Bend, passed away Monday, June 3, 2019. She was born in Yadkin County on March 17, 1929 to the late Ervin and Lizzie Brown Steelman. Mrs. Matthews was a member of Forbush Friends Meeting. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved gardening, caring for her flowers, and cooking for her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bobby June Matthews, Sr., son Timothy Dale Matthews, great-grandchildren Carter, Brock, and Sophie Matthews, daughter-in-law Karen Matthews, son-in-law Dan Hutchens, sisters Pearlie Vestal and Helen Harris, and brothers Clarence, George, Clinton, and J.D. Steelman. Surviving are her three children Sandra Matthews Hutchens, Bobby June “Bud” Matthews, Jr. (Pat Seagraves), and Tony (Melinda) Matthews, grandchildren Travis Matthews, Cindy (Kevin) Matthews, Brock (Lisa) Matthews, Matthew (DeAnna) Davis, Kimberly (Jeff) Sneed, and Thomas Allan Matthews, great-grandchildren Danielle, Timothy, Megan, Luca, Ella, Gabriel, Suzanna, Victoria, Weston, Hunter, and step-grandchildren Sondra (Larry) Smith and David (Denise) Hutchens, and two sisters Mary Ruth Brawley and Ola Trivette. Her funeral service will be conducted Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Forbush Friends Meeting with Rev. Ray Lambe officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
