Mrs. Virgie “Perk” Ruth Wooten Mathis (90) of East Bend died Sunday, September 10, from natural causes. She was born in Yadkin County on June 1, 1933, to the late Pride Elbert and Lola Veana Wall Wooten and was married on June 26, 1952, to Richard “Dick” Asbury Mathis. They were married for fifty-five years until his passing in 2007. She retired from East Bend Elementary School in 1992. Virgie’s love of children and her faith guided her life and motivated her. Children were important to her. She was a Teacher’s Assistant in Kindergarten classes and taught young children at her church in Sunday School. Being with kids always energized her and kept her on her toes. Many children have told her how important her caring spirit was to them over the years. Faith was another important aspect of her life; fellowship with others was always a priority. Virgie was also known for her chicken and pumpkin pies. She always baked with her special ingredient- love. She was preceded in death also by her sisters Gaynel Doub and Shelby Vestal, brothers Trasker B. Wooten, Thomas Wooten, and Glendon Wooten. Surviving Virgie are her daughter Cathy Troutner of East Bend and her son Richard Andrew “Andy” Mathis (Alesha) of Warner Robins, GA. Grandchildren are Zachary Troutner (Shelby) of East Bend, and Michelle Mathis Lynch (Layne) of Elkridge, Maryland. Also surviving her are her brothers Leon Wooten (Margaret), and Samuel Wooten (Patricia), sister-in-law Ruth Wooten, and many special nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Gentry Family Funeral Service in East Bend. The funeral will be on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 11:00 am at Prospect United Methodist Church, and laid to rest at Prospect UMC beside her beloved Dick. Rev. Kelly Carpenter will officiate the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial be made to Prospect United Methodist Church ℅ Sara Williams; 3541 Smithtown Road; East Bend, NC 27018. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the staff at Yadkin Nursing Care Center and Liberty Hospice Services. She was shown love, respect, and caring by Yadkin Nursing.
