Dobson- Mr. Walter “Toehead” Smith, 82, of Fancy Lane passed away Friday, July 29, 2022 peacefully at his home. He was born September 30, 1939 in Surry County to the late Walter C. and Ethel Hodges Smith. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Tim Mendenhall. “Toehead” as he was lovingly known, was retired with over 30 years of service from the NC DOT Highway Division Yadkinville Office. He was a faithful member of Charity Baptist Church, served as a medic in the US Army, and was just an all around jack-of-all-trades. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and has hunted and fished in several different states. “Toehead”was a big coon hunter; competitively and just for pleasure with friends. He won several local, State, and National championships. His true love was his family, and the time that he enjoyed spending with them. Surviving are his beloved wife of 64 years, Nellie Ruth Smith; son, Tony Walter (Myrna) Smith; daughter, Sue Ann Mendenhall; Grandchildren, Jessica (Jamison) Mendenhall, Jennifer (Jacob) Daughtry; numerous friends; and his special canine companion, Rosie. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Sunday at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. His funeral service will be 11 AM Monday at Charity Baptist Church by Rev. Marty Nixon and his son, Tony Smith. Mr. Smith will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the Smith Family.
