Wiley Walter Shore, of Shore Road, Yadkinville, went to be with his Maker at midnight on May 4, 2019, following a fight with lung cancer. He was surrounded by his family, who he loved. Wiley was a grain farmer in Yadkin County who never met a stranger and who was a friend to all who knew him. He was always up for a laugh and a good story. Wiley was born March 20, 1939, to Luther and Thelma Reece Shore. He grew up as a dairy farmer, a calling he continued with his wife, Shelby Matthews Shore, and sons, Walter and Franklin Shore, who worked side by side with him every day. As a result, Wiley was not just a husband and father, but also a partner, a trusted and valued co-worker, and a well-loved and fast friend. The farming operation transitioned from dairy to grain farming, and Wiley enjoyed driving the big truck while hauling grain to market and meeting other farmers and truckers. He was never a man who talked about God a lot, but Wiley lived the ministry through his works and his friendships. He considered driving a truck and fellowshipping with other farmers and truckers as a ministry. He was always an innovative farmer who tried to advance and improve agriculture. In that area he proudly served on the North Carolina Board of Agriculture and the North Carolina State Fair Committee. He also served as President of North Carolina Dairy Herd Improvement Association and on the boards of North Carolina Dairy Association and Southeastern United Dairy Improvement Association, as well as other boards and committees related to agriculture. He was awarded the distinction of NC Outstanding Young Farmer by the North Carolina Jaycees. A lifelong member of Deep Creek Friends Meeting, Wiley served on various committees and was head of the Greeter Ministry at Deep Creek. He sang in the choir as long as he was able and was a great supporter and encourager of the youth and others in the meeting. Wiley also answered the call of service to the Lord as Coordinator of NC Friends Disaster Service, an all-volunteer ministry of rebuilding and repairing homes after natural disasters. Through that ministry he travelled throughout the United States, serving hundreds and making friends all over the country. He has been an inspiration to many who were going through difficult times. As part of the Disaster work, he and the other volunteers developed skills that they used outside of NC Friends Disaster Service. With those skills, they worked with the Navajo Indians in New Mexico, building a health care facility on the reservation and building bathrooms onto the hogans (local mud homes). They also used these skills as they repaired and remodeled houses in the neighborhood of the Friends Mission in Matamoras, Mexico, and at that Mission they erected a building and playground for children who had never seen a playground, and worked with local government to install a sewage system throughout the community. Wiley was very proud of the work they did. Wiley’s grandchildren believe he gets The Best Grandad Award. He seldom missed a ballgame, a concert, a dance competition or recital, and he loved to see his grandchildren perform and excel. He was proud of his children and all that they did, and he believed that his wife, Shelby, could do anything that was ever asked of her. They were not only partners in business, but also partners in life. Wiley is survived by his wife, Shelby Matthews Shore, and his family: son, Franklin Shore and wife Anita and their children, Ashley Dezern, Shannon Shore and Kaylee Shore; son, Walter Shore and wife Priscilla and great great nephew Dylan Hammer; daughter Donna Shore Terrell and husband Bill; and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Thelma Shore, his sisters Susan Steelman and Anne Smitherman, and his brother Jack F. Shore. The family will receive friends at Gentry Family Services of Yadkinville on Sunday, May 5, 2019 from 6-8 PM. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Deep Creek Friends Meeting, 1140 Deep Creek Church Road, Yadkinville, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to North Carolina Friends Disaster Service, 600 East Springfield Road, High Point, NC 27263. Online condolences may be made at www.gentryfuneralservice.com.
